3 Things to Consider Before You Buy a Turret Press

When looking to buy a new or used turret press, it is imperative that you have a clear understanding of your manufacturing requirements. Here are the top three most important things to consider.

1. Material Size and Thickness

First, you’ll want to determine the thickness of the material you’ll be cutting. If you’ll be using single-part processing to process flat-sheet metal, a punch press with a small 4 * 4ft table is the most ideal for you. However, if you want to produce flat-pattern sheet metal parts in large volume, then you will likely need a punch press with a table size of 4 * 8 ft or 5 * 10 ft.

2. Automation Capabilities

If you have an issue with labor utilization, or your goal is to achieve lights-out production, consider a punch press with automation options. Automation is extremely efficient, as it produces complete parts that are ready for the next manufacturing stage without the operator’s intervention. Automated systems are ideal for producing flat sheet metals in large quantities.

3. Processing Speed

Finally, make sure to determine the punch press’ processing speed, from the start of the cycle to the finish. Non-value-adding operations such as sheet loading, utility changes, and relocating work clamps are not typically included in the manufacturer’s time analysis, so you will have to be sure to time it yourself. In addition, note the ease of the process. You might be better off getting a punch press with a time that is a few seconds slower, but which has a smoother, more convenient setup.
